WHERE ON EARTH IS WALES?

WELSH ARTS ARCHIVE

CONTENT

Now it's time to think about the content of the image.

What is this image about?

"Angel" by Nigel Williams
"Angel" by Nigel Williams

  • Does the painting tell a story?

  • What can you tell about the character and scene in which they are set?

  • Is the artist interested in describing formal elements?

  • Why do you think the perspective looks a bit strange in the background?

  • Is this strange perspective just an accident, or did the artist intend it this way?

During your tour of these pages we want you to answer all the questions set and make use of all the prompts.

Click on Topic 1 or 2 to return to the first pages or click on 'Technique' to continue with the task.

Task 1:

Take a piece of paper and write a few lines about the painting. Think of all you have learned from the two earlier pages and bring this knowledge into a short analysis of the painting.

  • What is your response to the work?

  • Do you like it?

  • If you like it say why. If you don't then think of reasons why.

You can begin to bring all your new critical skills together now. Look at the composition. Are there elements which direct your eyes to a particular area?

Before you begin, read the artists statement below to gain a little extra insight to the motivation behind the painting. .

ARTIST STATEMENTS
Professional artists tend to write statements to either explain their work, or at least to give hints to the meaning and content. Read the statement by Nigel Williams (below) and when writing an analysis of the image include a little background information to display your knowledge of the artist and the work.

Artist Statement:
"I was born and brought up in the Upper Swansea valley at a time when my family had no running water inside the house and living conditions were bleak, compared to today. However, I remember this time as being full of love and warmth.
My latest work attemts to capture the essence of my memory of those times and tends to focus upon the blankets and shawls that were used by my mother to 'cwtch' me or my brother as she went about her daily chores."

Nigel Williams BA(Hons) Painting & Drawing
Thanks to Gill Day-Thomas, Kate Bell and Amanda Roberts for the inspiration and format of the contents of the project, and to Mary Howells for support and analysis.
