Reviews edited by

Most books reviewed are in print, and are for sale from Artcymru.co.uk . But some are out of print, for this I make no excuses, for they are all important to the history of the art and artists of Wales. So, get down your local library and make a nuisance of yourself there, or you could email my friend Jeff Towns, at Dylan's Bookstore in Swansea, who is the expert in all things second-hand in Welsh books. Tell him I sent you, then he will owe me a pint.

Josef Herman in Wales
by Carolyn Davies.
This gem of a little book is a delight. Aimed at the children's market its charm would grace any bookshelf. Carolyn Davies has narrated the life and work of Josef Herman, or 'Joe Bach' as he was known in Ystradgynlais, with extracts from his Welsh Diary. A quote from that diary - ' I stayed because here I found all I required. I I arrived a stranger for a fortnight. The fortnight became eleven years.' The book is full of colour plates of Josef's paintings and drawings, as well as photographs of him during his stay in Wales. I hope that this is the beginning of a whole new, series of publications for young people about the artists of Wales.

Painting the Dragon
by Anthony Jones
The book Painting the Dragon accompanied a BBC Wales television series of the same name and an exhibition of the artworks at the National Museum's Art in Wales Gallery, Cardiff in 2000. The book is well illustrated with cultural icons both historical and contemporary, and makes an excellent resource for educational purposes, as it celebrates the richness and diversity of Welsh Art.

John Petts and the Caseg Press -
Alison Smith.
It is well overdue, but at last we now have a book on the life and work of the outstanding wood- engraver and stained glass artist John Petts.
In 1990 I asked artist Will Roberts, of Neath, who I should photograph for the Archive project. He replied,
" You should go and see John Petts, and see him soon. "
Little did I know that John was already ill with cancer, and he died within twelve months of my meeting with him.
I met John in the Old Workhouse in Abergavenny, where he lived and had a workshop for his stained glass. As a parting gift John gave me a card of The Owl of Cwm Cowlyd 1950.
John met Brenda Chamberlain, a fellow student at the Royal Academy Schools, in London in 1935, they left and set up home in a semi derelict cottage in the mountains of Snowdonia, North Wales. It was here that they struggled to survive, printing small editions of greetings cards and book plates.
They started the Caseg Press in 1937 and in 1941 they published the Caseg Broadsheets with writer Alun Lewis.
Alison Smith is Programme Curator for nineteenth-Century Art at the Tate Gallery, London.

Offerings & Reinventions.
by Iwan Bala
It was in 1997, that I first photographed Iwan Bala, in his studio in Canton, Cardiff. So cold that it needed all his iconographic zeal, and perhaps some ironic humour to survive. He has now moved to the new centrally heated complex in Bute Street. This book was published to coincide with the exhibition of his work at Oriel 31, Newtown in 2000 and is a comprehensive appraisal of the work of one of the most critical artists working in Wales today. As well as Iwan's own writing, the book contains essays by Michael Tooby, Assistant Director of the National Museum and Gallery Cardiff, and Shelagh Hourahane - artist and curator - along with many plates in colour and black and white.
