PRINT AUCTION 2004
Swansea Print Workshop
will be holding their second Fine Art Print Auction at the GlynnVivian Art Gallery on November 20th 2004. The auctioneer will be
Osi Rhys Osmond
, and the event will begin at 1.30pm. There will be opportunities to view the prints before the auction as there will be two previews, one at
Swansea Print Workshop
on Friday November 19th at 7.00pm and the other on Saturday November 20th at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery at 11.00am to 1pm
In 2001,
Swansea Print Workshop
arranged a successful auction of prints at the Glynn Vivian Gallery. The proceeds from that auction were used to complete the refurbishment of our studios at 19A Clarence Street. The auction aroused considerable interest, and certainly raised the profile of printmaking and the activities of the Workshop in the area.
Building on the successes of 2001, for our current auction we have brought together a new collection of original fine art prints made by both national and international printmakers. The sale of these prints will contribute to setting up
Swansea Print Workshop
’s
“
Young Printmaker of the Year
” scheme, to encourage younger artists to become printmakers. In collaboration with Josef Herman Art Foundation, five of Herman’s lithographs will also be auctioned: proceeds from the sale of the Herman prints will raise funds for the foundation.
Jackie Ford (Secretary of
Swansea Print Workshop
) says, “This auction will give people an unique opportunity to see the diversity of images created by artist-printmakers and to see something of the range of activities carried out by
Swansea Print Workshop
”.
Swansea Print Workshop
is a ‘not for profit’ company limited by guarantee providing a community resource. SPW provides training in printmaking techniques for beginners and experienced artists. We run our own workshops and training programmes, and also run courses for other agencies such as DACE, Swansea College, Careers Wales etc.
We aim to raise awareness of the special accessibility and creative potential of printmaking as an art form and its unique suitability to first time users and non-artists.
SPW
is committed to supporting and encouraging young printmakers through our Outreach programme in the community. We have also set up a sponsorship scheme whereby young printmakers who show flair and promise will be supported and given access to the studio and one to one tutoring. - We provide training for workshop leaders and assistants. - We provide a platform for the exchange of information and the delivery of specialist workshops for professional artists and in service training
- We aim to encourage and support those wishing to make careers in the field of Fine Art printmaking, whether as practitioners, technicians or administrators. - We promote and research new methods of printmaking based on environmentally safe use of non-toxic materials.
The workshop opened in 1998, with the intention of providing much needed professional printmaking and drawing facilities in the Swansea area. With the aid of a substantial lottery grant
SPW
’
s premises have recently been refurbished and the project is slowly but surely realising its potential as a major contributor to the visual arts in South Wales.
The studios offer printmaking facilities to professional artists and also promotes and encourages community participation in the arts. We have a spacious studio based in central Swansea, which offers a range of technical processes including etching, relief printing and screenprinting. We also have a dedicated life-drawing studio in which classes are regularly held.
Workshops
are held regularly throughout the year for members of the public or for artists to brush up on their skills. The workshops provide an induction into the printing processes and aim to facilitate independent use of the studio. The sharing of skills and experience through this process has been both valuable and rewarding for everyone concerned.
The studio operates
Open Access
days, where printmakers can come and use the facilities and pursue their own work in a peaceful, professional environment.
We use one press made in 1854 and know enough of its history to know that many fine prints have already been produced on this basic technology. It’s good to think we can continue and add to that tradition.
Editioning
The Workshop provides an editioning service for artists by arrangement. Recently the studio worked with artist Glenys Cour to produce and edition one of 12 prints commissioned by the Contemporary Arts Society of Wales.
The Workshop is committed to supporting and encouraging
young printmakers
through “PrintWorks” an Outreach Project, funded by the Arts Council of Wales, in collaboration with the City and County of Swansea. We have a mobile printing press which we take out to various schools, colleges and community groups, and put on workshops teaching a number of different printmaking processes. We are also in the process of setting up a sponsorship scheme whereby young printmakers that show flair or promise, will be supported and given access to the studio and one to one tutoring.
