Tina Cunningham: Environmental Artist

"Seaweed Spiral"

"I am continuously looking at the natural world around me, and it never ceases to amaze me. My artwork is made in response to these discoveries. In turn I develop creative activities that let others discover for themselves with the addition of their own personal meanings and understanding.

Working with the changing seasons, I return to certain materials and sites at various times of year to discover new properties and develop the potential of what I have already used. I work both large scale and small mainly on location.

Large site specific works are designed to promote the individuality of the chosen site. The purpose of the site, the history or legend all contributes to the design as well as the composition of the work and the rest of the immediate environment. The aim is to work with and not to impose on what is already there. Also the materials that are used help form the design. If possible materials from the site are used such as willow, hazel or, sycamore as they are assured to grow on the site. If the work is to be a living piece it must fit in with what is naturally there. Live wood (green wood) is used straight away and will have a chance to grow and change the work. While new growth is rewoven to produce a more solid shape as time goes by. Dead wood can be used as well giving more linear works. I have worked in lakes, on steep hillsides as well as woodlands and on the beach; each area has something special and is unique. These works are often made by the local community as a focal point for everyone to experience, enjoy, and discover more about the site.

Smaller site specific works are created both inland and on the beach. Some are more temporary than others. I return to work on an idea time and time again. Learning more about the material and the natural workings of the site. Contrasts of colour and texture become important in these pieces as well as the form".

"Sun Wheel"

"I concentrate on the composition of shapes occupying positive and negative spaces to produce portable woven sculptures. The designs for these forms are create from my own drawings of natural organic shapes.
Shape, form and composition fascinate me. Most of these works are curvaceous which give them a friendly character. Repeated shapes in the work that give a restful feeling to the eye.

I am based in west Carmarthenshire and have worked over the past four years mainly in West and South Wales and in the West of England. Large-scale work has been commissioned for organisations, as well as residencies undertaken in schools and workshops".
