Artists Statement:
'Through the decade of the 90’s I worked on a series of still life paintings loosely based on the ‘Vanitas’ theme, symbolising the beauty and fragility of human life.
I was looking for a symbolic layer of meaning for my painting, which was then, I suppose, in the expressionist tradition of landscape. I found the theme to be an inexhaustible source of new discoveries in the relating of colour and form in space. Each painting suggests a new one.
Though in the early years I experimented with abstract expressionism, relief's and ceramics, for the most part my work has been in the tradition of direct observation of nature which I have found to be the best way to achieve authentic painting.'
