Rob Newell is a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design at Swansea Institute of Higher Education. Having studied Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art and at Goldsmiths College, he is presently the Course Director for the BA (Hons) Painting and Drawing award.

 

Artists Statement:

"My work in painting and drawing has been mainly involved with landscape; coastal expanses, destroyed urban environments, rock and hill forms. Certain formal and thematic concerns have been developed throughout, dealing with experiences of space, order and randomness, formative and
destructive processes, the interplay of physical forces over time, the rhythmic organisation of detail and mass. Sometimes I have used human forms to bring aspects of identity and its loss into the exploration of these themes.

I have also been basing work on particular places in Wales, in which respect it has become topographical, but with the ultimate aim of investing the more formal concerns with the complexity that such close study of landscape can achieve."

 

 

 

Robert Newell has shown at the Royal Academy on eight occasions to date. He has also shown with the Royal Watercolour Society and has held a one-person show at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea. Rob is also a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy.

Robert Newell uses meticulous drawing techniques which, although attentive to detail, are extremely expressive. Watercolour and gouache are combined to create varying degrees of luminosity.

We recommend a personal viewing of Rob Newell's work. His skill and attention to detail cannot be appreciated fully via the web. Rob's work commands admiration, each painting taking up to 12 months to complete.
