Pete Davis.
Pete Davis was born in Cardiff in 1947, and educated at Splott Secondary Modern School. He began taking photographs at the age of eleven; after leaving school at fifteen, he was employed as a technician at Cardiff University where his interest in photography grew. In 1967 he became an advertising and fashion photographer in a Cardiff studio. After ten years, his commitment to his own photographic work took him to a quiet village in West Wales where he embarked on his continuing exploration of the landscape of the British Isles. He is currently Senior Lecturer and Leader of the BA (Hons.) Documentary photography course at the School of Art, Media and Design, University of Wales College, Newport, and a staff member of the Centre for Photographic Research. Pete is also currently researching and photographing aspects of the Welsh landscape to complete his Ph.D in fine art.

Wildwood.
This new work, although concentrating on one motif, encapsulates many of the elements of the wider landscape that have featured in my work over the years. Beauty, mystery, myth, spirituality and history are all represented here, all significant aspects of the Welsh landscape.

Comments on Pete Davis' work:
"Pete Davis is a self effacing photographer...he lets his subject have the say, first and last...he plays within the narrow confines that is the subtle art of the camera...with that Welsh characteristic that the ordinary is extraordinary...his camera stares and records and allows the subject to come into focus."
|
"This is the photography of the spirit of place, not the memory of place."
He says himself:
"In photographing the landscape, I sometimes feel I am attempting the impossible. To understand the land itself and how all those elements that make up the land - rocks, trees, water, hills - fit together. To reflect on how the land has been shaped by man, in turn, how the landscape shapes the lives of the indigenous population... To create some kind of order and meaning out of the seemingly chaotic elements of the landscape."
