MARK COX

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I have been painting on and off all my life. I was brought up in a family where painting was encouraged and regarded as an important part of self-expression.  I took up painting seriously in 2000. Since then I have been painting and exhibiting my work. I have completed a   BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art through the University of Wales. I have found that study has broadened my understanding of art and indirectly improved my technique. I have a wide appreciation of art and paintings in particular. This is reflected in my own work. I am particularly interested in the form and colour within a painting and although there is now normally a figurative element in them that is not to say that they are purely exoteric.
My work has been influenced by many artists too numerous to list but my main influence is currently David Salle a leading member of the transavantgarde.

I am disappointed that painting is in many academic circles considered passé. I look forward to the time when painting is recognised as a valid medium in the world of contemporary art.”
