Artists Statement:

"Swansea is my home town and it is here that I live with my family. I re-entered the education system in 1994 after several year as a freelance window-dresser and a spell at home bringing up my daughter. On completion of an Access course in Art & Design in 1997, I began a three year BA(Hons) degree course in Fine Art at Swansea Institute of Higher Education, from which I have recently graduated. During this time my work has leaned towards the figurative, with emphasis on portraiture. The face holds a fascination for me and I have produced a range of head studies or ‘tronies’ worked in a range of media.

Through recent and sustained study of the self-portrait, my work has evolved to encompass the theme of identity, with specific accent on the female as artist."
Maggie Garrett

Maggie Garrett's work cleverly examins the
portraiture of many recognised artists, from Anguissola to Kyffyn Williams.
This examination has resulted in a body of work which expresses personal metaphors encapsulated within her choice of 'tronny.' Her use of materials is exceptionally good and the images created are of course personal, poignant whilst also being amusing.
