KARL DAVIES latest update 23rd November 2006

I have been far more involved in drawing recently, keeping and finishing a sketchbook. The structure within composition has been my primary focus and secondly manipulating line to create volume and space.

I was born in Newport, South Wales. I studied for my BA Fine Art, at Cheltenham. I then undertook a teacher training course at Cardiff UWIC where I achieved a PGCE in Art & Design.

In December 2004 I finally began painting seriously again. At that time the primary concern was to develop my use of tone and contrast. Then followed the problem of creating space and distance in paint, on a flat surface.

Initially I used digital photography to explore composition and at the same time rediscovered the joy of using paint.

I was for the first time using landscape as a theme. Landscape is proving to be a successful vehicle through which I can express and communicate my joy of using paint.

I enjoy the process of creating form with paint. I use a mixture of deliberate and intuitive brush marks in each composition and usually prepare a sketch before painting.

The development of my work over the past year is a result of focus and perseverance. My work is continuing to evolve from one painting to the next.

The theme of landscape is proving to be an inexhaustible and liberating resource.
