DAN LLYWELYN HALL

ARTIST STATEMENT

'I believe my paintings transcend the viewer into a different understanding of landscape: the paintings embroil observed forms that all combine to create a Lyrical Harmony. My paintings are not necessarily topographical but do sometimes attempt to convey the character of a place.   I see the tradition of landscape painting as unconquerable and offers the artist boundless possibilities.'

Born in Cardiff 1980. Dan Llywelyn Hall graduated from an applied arts degree at the University of Westminster in 2002. Since graduation he has gone on to win the prestigious ‘Sunday Times Young Artist of the Year Award’ and twice appeared in the ‘Welsh Artist of the Year’ exhibition held at St David’s Hall.

Dan Llywelyn Hall’s work features in public collections such as the House of Lords, Barclays Bank, BT and many private collections throughout the U.K. and Germany.

He has recently completed a highly successful touring collaborative exhibition entitled ‘ Wales: Dead or Alive?’ with ‘ Welsh Book of the Year’ prizewinner, Owen Sheers.

Dan Llywelyn Hall has exhibited with many Welsh Galleries including Washington Gallery, Martin Tinney, Albanny Gallery, The Brecknock Museum, Oriel Pen Y Fan and The Kooywood Gallery. He has regular showings with most of these galleries.

He is represented by the Albemarle Gallery in London.

"Summer"

‘…Intriguing painting; in which a more or less coherent image gradually emerges from beneath a surface of scratches and splatters.’

Frank Whitford SUNDAY TIMES

"Ship Hotel and Splash"

‘Turmoil lies at the heart of Dan Llywelyn Hall’s images, in which mountain peaks and reservoirs explode into view as though the planet was being created before our very eyes. These pictures are fun: as good as a cold shower in the morning and possibly more lasting.’

Caroline Juler, GALLERIES MAGAZINE

"The Palace of Westminster"

‘The paintings of Dan Llywelyn Hall, who blurs the definitions between abstract and figurative art, are increasingly meeting with critical praise.’

ANTIQUES TRADE GAZETTE

‘True to the Expressionist movement, Hall accomplishes his aim through distortion and exaggeration and through the vivid jarring of formal elements.’
