KATH LLEWELLYN
EXHIBITION
New York born
Kath Llewellyn
has had remarkable personal renaissance as an artist. Her father was a commercial artist and her uncle had studied art. Kath grew up in Connecticut and studied art at the Paier School of Art there. She worked in the advertising industry in the 1970s.
After moving to Britain she trained as a nurse in Bridgend in the early 80s, and has worked as a theatre nurse since then. Her art was neglected until two years ago when she was reunited with her uncle Ken. He had returned to painting after a gap of forty years and encouraged Kath to do likewise.
After refreshing her skills in art classes with Andrew Evans and Graham Hadlow at Emrys Art she was painting again and has devoted her spare time to painting ever since.
Kath Llewellyn lives in a Carmarthenshire farmhouse and many of the paintings are finely executed studies of the details of her surroundings: horse tack hanging in the barn, swallows nesting.
Her oils have a superb eye for detail and a timeless quality.
Sat 9.30-5.00. Free admission

Emrys Art Open Competition 2003
The Emrys Art Open is becoming a significant part of the calendar for artists in West Wales, and across an increasing geographical area. With our website now attracting visits from near and far we have already had interest from all over the UK and into Europe. 2003 will mark the fourth time we have run the competition. The Open alternates years with Art West, the other major open competition in the region.
Unlike many other competitions ours is truly open in that at least one picture from every entrant is exhibited in the Exhibition. The show is therefore free of the value judgments and in crowd thinking that limits other shows. The variety of submissions is huge, and our confidence that people can judge themselves whether their work is worth showing has so far proven well founded, with a remarkably high standard of submissions.
We are proud to have appointed eminent figures from the art world to judge the prizes. This year we are delighted that Aneurin Jones, well respected Welsh painter of people in Wales, has agreed to judge.
First, Second and Third prizes are awarded from all entries. To encourage children and young people to enter First, Second and Third prizes are also awarded in three age categories: Under 6, 6-11 and 12-16. A Peoples Prize is also awarded by ballot of the visitors to the exhibition. The prizes will be of art materials including easels and paint sets of all media.
The last Open attracted an entry of over 300 paintings in Carmarthen. This year again the intial (unselected) exhibition will be in Carmarthen Library 30th May- 14th June. Winning and commended entries will then be shown in the Oriel Emrys Gallery in Haverfordwest 21st June to 12th July.
The rules and entry forms are already being distributed and can be obtained from Emrys Art Supplies, 8-10 Woods Row, Carmarthen, SA31 1BX, Tel . The deadline for the entries will be 23rd May. Entry fees are £5 per item, but locals can obtain free entries by stewarding the exhibition. Updates on the competition will be given on our website www.emrysart.co.uk and through the shops.
I do hope you will be able to support this venture.
