Roger Andrews

Roger Andrews Artist's Statement

"My basic rationale as an artist is the pursuit, albeit impossible, of perfection. I want my work to inspire interrogation, emotion, respect, envy and admiration in the mind of the viewer and satisfaction in that of my own.

Unfortunately the gap between artistic concept and figurative realisation is a wide one and whilst I am often pleased with my work, I have yet to achieve satisfaction.

Nevertheless it is this obsession which drives me constantly to seek new and brighter horizons for my abilities and thereby, I hope, provide my patrons with a satisfying and fulfilling experience on the successful completion of a commission.

The two most significant influences in my education and career as a sculptor have been the writings of Professor Edouard Lanteri, renowned teacher, sculptor and intimate friend of Rodin and my friendship with the famous Welsh sculptor Robert Thomas, whom I met in 1993 when he walked into my Studio one day. During the ensuing six years until his death in 1999, I was a frequent visitor to Robert's studio in Barry where I absorbed as much of his knowledge and ability as his generosity enabled. I was greatly saddened by his premature death in 1999 but will always be thankful for the privilege of having been mentored by this great Welsh sculptor".

Biography

Roger Andrews was born in 1949 at Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan and was educated at Cardiff High School until leaving to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering with the British Steel Corporation.

Much of his professional life was spent in engineering Sales and Marketing until diverting to a career in property renovation and development.

Throughout this earlier career he combined his innate ability as an artist and sculptor with his acquired knowledge and skill in engineering to produce high quality technical illustrations, graphical designs and scale product models as well as production prototypes.

It was no surprise to friends and family when in 1989 he gave way to this life long passion, to pursue a career as a sculptor and model maker, working under the name Andrews Studios
