David Marchant

Main painting medium-oil on canvas/board.
Site specific / installation work- various materials
“I am particularly interested in the historical, social and geological, factors which give curious ambiguities to various sites within our landscape-thus giving me a profound focus to work with.”

‘I am an artist who chooses to work outdoors on specific sites to create contextual, visual and elemental work. The sites where the paintings are created are chosen very carefully, not for their visual content but for their underlying cultural and historical depth and ambience. I sometimes use the raw material to augment vibrancy within the works. The format of the work is carefully controlled to create movement around the paintings and contours or construction lines and shapes are put into the works to exaggerate the spaces between the levels throughout.

Sometimes I make a line to create a sense of tension in the painting rather like a powerful force which dominates our welsh landscapes .The paintings develop a moody atmospheric presence, portraying an unpredictable outcome.

I like to use natural elements within my work, as they are volatile, like the spontaneity of nature itself, bringing the work closer to the subject it portrays. I always work outdoors for the first few layers of the paintings so that there is no predictability with what the finished pieces will turn out like and I am able to keep that strong empathy with my surroundings.

I enjoy working in this way, as my mind can keep fresh and focused on the paintings. The pieces are then worked on in the studio where the painting is carefully controlled with strong emphasis on shape and form to make sure the viewer’s eye reads around the piece of work correctly.

Between there and back - Oil on canvas - 900x900mm

Shapes of interest are taken out of the paintings to create 3D works. I regard my 3D work as 3 dimensional paintings rather than sculptures. These are then taken back to the original sites and are photographed in their natural surroundings from which I feed new ideas back into 2D works fulfilling the need for the art to undergo physical and elemental changes on their journey to completion
