BILL WHEELER
AT THE ANGEL HOTEL, ABERGAVENNY
Well-known Pontypridd watercolour artist and writer Bill Wheeler will be leading a series of weekend courses at The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny this year. Bill has exhibited his work in a variety of exhibitions around Britain, and his work is to be found in many countries throughout the world.
He is a very experienced tutor, running residential painting holidays, day and weekend workshops in Britain and in Holland, and demonstrating the skills of painting in watercolour to groups and societies throughout Britain. This will be his first series of courses in Abergavenny.
I am looking forward very much to exploring the historic settings and the landscapes around Abergavenny with my students said Bill. There are so many wonderful views within easy reach of the hotel that well be spoilt for choice. Abergavennys Norman Castle, the Blorenge and Sugar Loaf mountains, and the imposing Victorian Market Hall, are all on his list of possibilities.
Bills weekends are geared to attract beginners and experienced watercolour artists alike. Students always enjoy the opportunity to work and study with an experienced artist such as Bill, and also the social aspects of getting to know a group of fellow students sharing common interests.
The courses will be based at The Angel Hotel, an attractive Georgian building in the centre of town. The hotel has recently been taken over, and is being managed by William Griffiths and Charlotte Burgess, who are overseeing an ambitious restoration project aiming to make the hotel one of the most elegant in Wales. The décor has been carefully researched and planned to reflect authentic Georgian designs, and original works of contemporary art decorate the public rooms.
The restaurant at The Angel is already beginning to make a name for itself under its new Head Chef, Tony Jones, who uses only fresh ingredients, as many as possible sourced locally. Menus are contemporary and well-balanced, and, if the sell-out St Valentines Day dinner was typical, extremely popular.
The first watercolour weekend started on March 28th; further weekends will be held in May (16-18), July (18-20) and October (24-26).
Bill Wheeler is a regular contributor to the magazine
Leisure Painter
, and he is currently working on a book on watercolour technique, to be published next autumn by A&C Black & Co of London. He was recently commissioned by Derwent Pencils to produce two watercolours of the Lake District, to adorn their special 50th anniversary box of pencils which will be released for sale this Christmas.
