Josef Herman a Polish Artist in Wales

‘I walked the small streets and the open hills where you
can touch the sky.’

WHY JOSEF HERMAN?

A study of Herman's work can lead us in many different directions. His love of African sculpture could allow us an opportunity to examine other cultures, work 3 dimensionally, or draw parallels with artists like Picasso.

Herman was a refugee, fleeing wartime Europe, therefore issues surrounding war and asylum could be explored. His subject matter focused on industrial landscape, the built environment and especially, working people. He drew, painted and kept sketchbooks.

His images are at once sophisticated, modern, whilst appearing naïve, using blocks of vivid colour, and broad monochrome marks in brush and charcoal.
